News from Delhi Math

[Srila Gurudeva, is a pure devotee, and an eternal associate of the
Lord. As such, he is transcendental, all-knowing and limitlessly
powerful. His devotees, however, may be ignorant of this tattva, or
may in a particular situation forget it, or put it to one side.]

Dear devotees,

Please accept my dandavat pranams. All glories to Srila Gurudeva and
Srila Prabhupada. All glories to Sri Sri Guru and Gauranga. All
glories to Sri Sri Radha-vinodehariji.

Yesterday I wrote that we are going one day at a time. Today did not
see a continuation of the progress of the last few days. Srila
Gurudeva did not sleep well during the night, and when the doctor
asked him why not, he replied that he was not aware that he had not
been sleeping. He was tired during the day, and showed very little
interest in eating. Yesterday was the first day for some time that he
wanted to chant on his beads, but today he did not do so. Sundara
Gopal Prabhu said that he anyway chants on his fingers, sometimes for

In the morning, for the first time for some time he went onto his
balcony in the morning sun. Devotees were happy to have his darshan,
and he waved to them briefly.

Doctor Ray was asked by Padmanabha Maharaja about the long term
prospect of Srila Gurudeva’s recovery, and he refused to make any
comment. Premamayi Didi, a qualified professional doctor, said that no
doctor could make any prediction about Srila Gurudeva’s long term
recovery based on the trend of the last few days. One would have to
see a more substantial recovery over a longer period of time.

Today is Doctor Ray’s last day here, though he will return in two
weeks’ time. He is informing and training the devotees here. Doctor
Beltin arrived from Germany; he is in very good agreement with Doctor
Ray, who is in charge of the treatment at the moment, since his
protocols have worked well in the past, and on this occasion. The
general understanding is that the first priority is hydration,
nourishment and building up Srila Gurudeva’s immune system.

One may question whether it is even meaningful to talk about building
up the immune system of the transcendental pure devotee. Devotees are
discussing the applications in the present situation of our
philosophical understanding that the pure devotee is omniscient and
limitlessly powerful, does not have a material body, and is not
subject to pain or suffering. This philosophy applies to Srila
Gurudeva. The question arises, Granted that he is transcendental, does
he, under the influence of Yogamaya (not mahamaya), have the mood of a
sadhaka, and experience some of the feelings of a conditioned soul,
though not in the same way as we do? It is easy to cite the
philosophical conclusions, but not so easy to reconcile them with our
direct, personal experiences in our dealings with Srila Gurudeva.

Aspiring for service Sri Hari, Guru and Vaishnavas,

B V Nemi
