PASTIMES IN THIS MONTH OF KARTIKA
.
Srila Narayana Gosvami Maharaja, Kartika, 2003
[For the spiritual purification of the world, the great master of mystic powers Srila Bhaktivedanta Narayana Gosvami Maharaja is performing a pastime of illness. He did this to a certain extent during Kartika 2002 as well. At that time we heard his discourse by phone. We were in Vrndavana and he was in Delhi, just like now. In that regard, here is Part 2 of the lecture entitled, "A Phoned Glorification of Kartika Month." In describing the many important pastimes that took place in this holy month of Kartika, which in turn establish the glory of Kartika, Paramaradhya Srila Maharaja discussed several verses from Srimad-Bhagavatam:]
dhanyah sma mudha-gatayo 'pi harinya eta
ya nanda-nandanam upatta-vicitra-vesam
akarnya venu-ranitam saha-krsna-sarah
pujam dadhur viracitam pranayavalokaih
(Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.21.11)
It was during this month, while feeling separation from Krsna, that the gopis lamented, "We are not fortunate like the deer in this forest. People say they are foolish, but they are not so. We are foolish, because we don't know how to love Krsna like these deer. When prema is very high, it breaks all boundaries. These deer, although by nature very shy, have broken all boundaries by their intense love for Krsna. They gave up their shyness, they approached Him, and they are exchanging their hearts feelings with Him through their loving glances. We cannot do this, and therefore we are unfortunate. We will be lucky if we can die and take birth as deer in our next life. In that way we can see Krsna and approach Him when He is cow-grazing."
In this month the gopis remembered that when Krsna plays on His flute in the forest, the cows become stunned. With eyes of transcendental emotions the gopis see both Krsna and the cows, and further lament in their mood of separation. They see that although it is the nature of animals to spend their time in eating, when Krsna plays His flute these cows forget to eat and instead pick up their ears to hear. Humans have very small ears, but cows have large ears, like cups. Through the cups of their ears these cows drink the nectar of Krsna's flute playing, and when they taste it they forget everything else. They have grass in their mouths, but they forget to chew. Even the calves, who were drinking the milk from the udders of their mothers, are like this. The milk is coming into their mouths, but they have forgotten to swallow. They simply stand with tears gliding down from their eyes, and they embrace Krsna in the core of their hearts.
The love of the cows is not as high as that of the gopis, but due to the nature of their own prema, the gopis think the cows are greater. Those who are maha-bhagavatas, and what to say of maha-maha-bhagavatas like the gopis, see their own love and their own mood in all others. Yet they think, "I am unfortunate; I have no love."
In this month, Sri Radhika lamented in separation:
purnah pulindya urugaya-padabja-raga
sri-kunkumena dayita-stana-manditena
tad-darsana-smara-rujas trna-rusitena
limpantya anana-kucesu jahus tad-adhim
(Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.21.16)
["The aboriginal women of the Vrndavana area become disturbed by lust when they see the grass marked with reddish kunkuma powder. Endowed with the color of Krsna's lotus feet, this powder originally decorated the breasts of His beloveds, and when the aboriginal women smear it on their faces and breasts, they feel fully satisfied and give up all their anxiety."]
This is an example of Radhika's madanakhya-mahabhava (the highest ecstatic love for Krsna). Here She glorifies the aboriginal girls who live in the forest, and She says that they are lucky – whereas She is not. In the morning time, when they walk around Giriraja Govardhana, they see some red kunkuma powder on the grass and go to pick it up. This kunkuma came from the lotus feet of Krsnacandra when He was returning home in the early morning on the damp grass, but it originally came from the breasts of His beloved. The Pulindi girls think themselves to be very fortunate to obtain this kunkuma. Simply by their smelling the fragrance, Krsna appears in their hearts, and then they smear that kunkuma paste all over their bodies and faces and thus meet with Krsna in their hearts. There He fulfills all their desires.
Radhika is thinking that these Pulindi girls are fortunate, but more fortunate is the grass because it was directly touched by Krsna's feet. Even more fortunate is that beloved gopi from whose breasts this kunkuma has come. That gopi is Radhika Herself, but because of Her madanakya-mahabhava she forgets this – and instead glorifies others.
Govardhana-puja also took place in this month. All the Vrajavasis worshiped Giriraja Govardhana and performed Annakuta Mahotsava. Seeing this, Indra became very angry and created torrential rain, and Krsna cut away his pride. In this month, Indra came and worshiped Krsna after his pride was cut, all the demigods performed kirtana, and Krsna received the name Govinda.
Saradiya rasa-lila was also performed in this month. As stated in Srimad-Bhagavatam:
sri-badarayanir uvaca
bhagavan api ta ratrih
saradotphulla-mallikah
viksya rantum manas cakre
yoga-mayam upasritah
(Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.29.1)
["Sri Badarayani said: Sri Krsna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, full in all opulences. Yet upon seeing those autumn nights scented with blossoming jasmine flowers, He turned His mind toward loving affairs. To fulfill His purposes He employed His internal potency."]
Although Krsna is Bhagavan, and although He is atmarama (taking pleasure within) and aptakam (fully satisfied), in this month He became inspired by the beauty of the Vrndavana forest. There, in the middle of the night, He left his home and took shelter of Yogamaya:
drstva kumudvantam akhanda-mandalam
ramananabham nava-kunkumarunam
vanam ca tat-komala-gobhi ranjitam
jagau kalam vama-drsam manoharam
(Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.29.3)
["Lord Krsna saw the unbroken disk of the full moon glowing with the red effulgence of newly applied vermilion, as if it were the face of the goddess of fortune. He also saw the kumuda lotuses opening in response to the moon's presence and the forest gently illumined by its rays. Thus the Lord began to play sweetly on His flute, attracting the minds of the beautiful-eyed gopis."]
He began to play on His flute, and the flute sound entered the hearts of the Vraja gopis. They became mugdha, completely bewildered and, forgetting everything else, they ran into the forest to meet with Him.
In this month, the gopis who were locked inside their homes were brought to Krsna by a mood of their very strong fire of separation from Krsna. By this viraha-tap, any imperfection in the moods of those who did not yet have sufficient association with the nitya-siddha gopis was completely burned away. By deeply meditating in intense separation they at once met with Krsna in their hearts and embraced Him. These sweet pastimes took place in this month.
In this month the gopis saw the footprints of Radhika and said:
anayaradhito nunam
bhagavan harir isvarah
yan no vihaya govindah
prito yam anayad rahah
(Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.30.28)
["Certainly this particular gopi has perfectly worshiped the all-powerful Personality of Godhead, Govinda, since He was so pleased with Her that He abandoned the rest of us and brought Her to a secluded place."]
"This gopi, whom Krsna has taken alone into the forest, leaving all the rest of us, is most fortunate." In this way, all the Vraja gopis give honor to Srimati Radhika in this month. When Krsna disappeared from rasa-lila, the gopis cried and sang in separation the verses from Gopi-gita. One example is as follows:
tava kathamrtam tapta-jivanam
kavibhir iditam kalmasapaham
sravana-mangalam srimad atatam
bhuvi grnanti ye bhuri-da janah
(Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.31.9)
["The nectar of Your words and the descriptions of Your activities are the life and soul of those suffering in this material world. These narrations, transmitted by learned sages, eradicate one's sinful reactions and bestow good fortune upon whoever hears them. These narrations are broadcast all over the world and are filled with spiritual power. Certainly those who spread the message of Godhead are most munificent."]
This verse is so sweet and powerful that when Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu heard it from the lotus mouth of Maharaja Prataparudra, He told him, "You have given me so many valuable jewels. I have nothing to give you in return; I have only have my self, so I am embracing you." When Mahaprabhu embraced Prataparudra Maharaja, the bhavas and sweet meanings of the verses of Gopi-gita manifested in his heart.
In this month Krsna told the gopis of Vrndavana:
na paraye 'ham niravadya-samyujam
sva-sadhu-krtyam vibudhayusapi vah
ya mabhajan durjara-geha-srnkhalah
samvrscya tad vah pratiyatu sadhuna
(Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.30.22)
["I am not able to repay My debt for your spotless service, even within a lifetime of Brahma. Your connection with Me is beyond reproach. You have worshiped Me, cutting off all domestic ties, which are difficult to break. Therefore please let your own glorious deeds be your compensation."]
Krsna said, "O My dear gopis, you have left all other obligations, including your families, and all other dharmas for me. This is very difficult to give up, but you have left all this for my happiness only. Therefore, even if I have a lifetime as long as Brahma, and even if I will serve you for many such lifetimes, still I would not be able to repay you. I would always be indebted to you for the love you have given me."
After describing these pastimes of Rasa-lila and Gopi-gita, Srila Sukadeva Gosvamipada stated:
vikriditam vraja-vadhubhir idam ca visnoh
sraddhanvito 'nusrnuyad atha varnayed yah
bhaktim param bhagavati pratilabhya kamam
hrd-rogam asv apahinoty acirena dhirah
(Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.33.39)
["Anyone who faithfully hears or describes the Lord's playful affairs with the young gopis of Vrndavana will attain the Lord's pure devotional service. Thus he will quickly become sober and conquer lust, the disease of the heart."]
Bhagavan Sri Krsna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, He is transcendental and His katha (descriptions of His glories and pastimes) is very powerful. Of all types of such katha, the katha of His servants is more powerful, the katha of his friends is more powerful, the katha of his parents in vatsalya-bhava is still more powerful, and the katha of His sporting with the young brides of Vraja is the highest and most powerful katha. It is so powerful that if even a fallen or sinful person hears it with faith, it can purify him. If one understands this and hears this katha, gopi-prema must enter into that person's heart, kick aside all anarthas, and turn him into a parama-bhagavata, topmost devotee.
In this month, Krsna killed the demon Sankasura and cut the jewel from his forehead. He then entered the company of all the gopis, who were all wondering to whom He would give that jewel. Krsna was thinking, "If I give the jewel to one, the others will be upset." Therefore, to avoid an argument among the gopis, Krsna gave the jewel to Baladeva Prabhu, who gave it to Madhumangala, who gave it to Srimati Radhika.
In this month Krsna killed Aristasura, and as a result of that killing Radha Kunda and Syama Kunda were manifest. That pastime took place today, (Oct 28th) and this holy day is called Bahulastami.
In this month, Krsna killed the demons Kesi and Vyomasura, and in this month Akrura came to Vraja and took Krsna and Balarama to Mathura. Krsna also killed Kamsa in this month.
In this month Krsna and Balarama performed the upanaya-sanskara (sacred thread ceremony). Because they had been brought up in Vraja, they have the mood that, "I am a cowherd boy and Mother Yasoda and Nanda Baba are My parents." However, Vasudeva and Devaki think, "We are the real parents of Krsna. It is part of the Vedic tradition that parents arrange for the upanaya-sanskara of their child, so if we arrange this function for Krsna, the impression will come in his heart that, "Vasudeva and Devaki are My parents." They tried to do this, but they failed. Krsna had already received the Radha mantra from Bhaguri Rsi. He received this mantra when He was in Vraja, but at that time He had no upanaya-sanskara. His upanaya-sanskara was performed in Mathura according to the duties of ksatryas.
Gargacarya gave Krsna the brahma-gayatri mantra, and when Krsna heard this mantra He fainted. Why? Radhika is the predominating deity of gayatri. Then, after His fire yajna, Krsna was looking for his mother and called out, "O Mother, where are you?" Devaki was standing near Him, but Krsna did not approach her – for He was looking for Mother Yasoda. In this way, although the Mathuravasis made the plan to give Krsna the sanskana that He is the son of Vasudeva and Devaki, it failed. This pastime took place in this month.
Sri Narada Rsi received the benediction from Krsna that those who will hear His sweet lila-katha in the places of His pastimes, especially during this Kartika month, will surely attain krsna-prema very soon. We should therefore have confidence; we need never become hopeless. We should know that by performing all these simple activities – offering a ghee lamp every day, attending mangal-arati, performing kirtana, singing Sri Damodarastakam, doing parikrama, offering maha-prasada, observing Annukuta Mahotsava, hearing hari-katha in all the pastime places – there is no doubt about success. It is only a question of time, and that time will not be very long. We will attain Krsna-prema and thus serve Radha-Krsna Yugala.

The Emporium of Everything by Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura Prabhupada We will be making a sad mistake if we think that the Lord, in the long run, may have nothing to confer upon us, and that by giving up what we have acquired we will only meet with difficulty. We forget that He is the Absolute. He is the emporium of everything. We need not be doubtful of His assurance that He will never fail us. We have free will, which we can exercise. But we are not expected to imagine that we are independent. We are bound to accept that we are His dependants. If we make a careful enquiry into the nature of phenomenal objects and carefully scrutinize them, we will fail to find anything capable of giving us the sort of satisfaction, relief and poise that the Fountainhead of all things can give us. Hence the Gita tells us that submission to the Supreme Authority, Sri Krsna, is the only desirable thing, and by such submission all our deepest desires will be fully and duly fulfilled. The question then, is how can we engender such submission when the temperament of corporeally measuring everything stands in the way of our higher purpose? Proceeding comprehension of our relationship (sambandha) with the Absolute Fountainhead, we must comprehend abhidheya, which signifies how to reach our coveted destination, or, in other words, what course we must adopt for the purpose of achieving our objective. That is the general meaning of abhidheya, and there are a great many varieties of abhidheya. According to some authorities there are sixty-four divisions of abhidheya. According to others, there are five. Although there are a multitude of paths we can adopt by means of which we can come to love the All-love, the Absolute, these methodologies are classified into sixty-four, nine or five divisions. But even among the sixty-four divisions, five are principal, and it is these five divisions that we shall deal with. They are: (1) bhagavat-sravana, bhagavat-kirtana and bhagavat-smarana (hearing, chanting and remembering in connection with Godhead); (2) sri hari-vigraha sevanam; (3) mathura-vasa; (4) sadhu-sanga (associating with saints); and (5) sri harinama-sankirtana. Mathura-vasa (3) implies eternal residence in Mathura, the holy place wherein permanent knowledge is present. Sri harinama-sankirtana (5) is chanting the transcendental Name of the Supreme Lord, Sri Hari, ceaselessly. Sri hari-vigraha sevanam (2), or serving the transcendental deity through arcana (formalized worship), is accomplished by worshipping the worshipful deity – which may be manifest as a painting, figurine or some other icon – using either five, sixteen or sixty-four specific articles in conjunction with corresponding mantras. All material things are spiritualized by the influence of dedication to the Supreme. When we dedicate worldly things to our worshipful deity, we need not consider whether they have any material value that we may enjoy. All sorts of mundane, temporary associations must be eliminated before anything can be offered to our worshipful deity. This is called bhuta-suddhi (purity of existence). Our worshipful deity is spiritual, so He must be offered spiritual things by a spiritual agent through spiritual acts. Material things are not welcomed by the Supreme Spirit and we should not bring any material thing before Him. If we were to do so, it would be tantamount to supposing Godhead to be one of Nature’s products, but that is certainly not the case. He should never be considered an object within the domain of ordinary phenomena. All the objects of worldly phenomena serve our purpose, but Godhead is not an object meant to serve us. He is the sole object of adoration and worship for all beings, and all services are to be offered to Him. We should not demand anything from Him in the same way that we might demand cheques or notes that can be cashed in whenever we need and for our own purposes. He is not our servitor. It is we who are His eternal servitors, and we are to offer our service to Him without expectation of anything in return. To demand anything in return for our service would render our service no more than a business transaction. When we go to a general store, we get various goods for which we pay some price. That sort of transaction is out of place in dealings with the Absolute. We can have such transactions when dealing with the non-absolute domain, but it is ridiculous to import such transactions into our association with the Absolute. There is never a need for a business mentality. We should always offer our service to Him and never receive any service from Him. We must not expect Godhead to serve us in any way. He need not come to our material aid as a worldly parent might come. We find that such demands as “dhanam dehi, rupam dehi, jayam dehi – [O Goddess Durga!] Give me money, give me a beautiful wife, give me victory, etc...” are frequently made by a class of people who style themselves as Saktyas*. Our prayers should never be to the same end. We should not pray: “Give us this day our daily bread.” We must not expect Godhead to beckon to our call. Yet we find such wrong attitudes everywhere. Devotion should be our principal aim, not reward seeking activity (karma) or the pursuit of empiric knowledge (jñana). _____________________

By his recent pastime in this world, Srila Gurudeva is bringing his sincere followers closer and closer to him. Thousands of devotees are spending their whole days wondering, “How is Srila Gurudeva? What service can I do for him? How can I develop my eternal relationship with him? What can I do to strengthen that, so I never have to feel separation from him?” In this way, the devotees are trying to become more fixed in their bhakti. The devotees are understanding with increasing clarity that their time and money belong to Srila Gurudeva, and are making a greater effort to practice what Srila Gurudeva has taught them, by praying with greater intensity than ever before and by applying themselves to their sadhana with heartfelt endeavour. Some are even researching and purchasing various medicines and healthy nutritious items for him. And some have come up with ingenious ways of getting to India. Indeed, devotees are flying in from all over the world to be near him at this time. As our hearts become filled with concern and as the subsequent desire to render service to Srila Gurudeva grows, we are prompted to contemplate the depth and nature of the guru-disciple relationship. Srila Gurudeva’s every act is an act of mercy, to help us develop in our spiritual life. Following this line of thought, it is only logical to conclude that this pastime, also, is meant to increase the relationship that comes with understanding who he really is: an unlimitedly powerful personality, every cell in his body being fully devoted to his Gurudeva and Radha and Krsna, completely free from material infection, and replete with all mystic and spiritual perfections. Therefore, he is not only capable of controlling his own ‘condition,’ but he is able to control God himself by his love. These two considerations are not mutually exclusive. The perfect example of this is Paramagurudeva Srila Bhakti Prajnana Kesava Gosvami Maharaja. He was willing to give his life to protect the life of his Guru Maharaja, Srila Prabhupada Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, and at the same time, he knew his Guru Maharaja as not needing anyone else’s help. Srila Gurudeva told the following story in Parama-gurudeva’s biography, regarding Paramagurudeva’s heroic deed in protecting Srila Prabhupada during Navadvipa-dhama parikrama:
“Srila Prabhupada went on foot in the parikrama…At one point, the parikrama party gathered in front of the temple of Praudha Maya in Kuliya Dvipa and the devotees listened to Srila Prabhupada relating the glories of Sri Navadvipa Dhama. Just then, the so-called brahmanas and caste gosvamis of Kuliya Navadvipa attacked. They hurled bricks, stones, hot water and soda bottles, and their assault caused pandemonium everywhere. The pilgrims were running here and there to protect their lives, and no one cared for anyone else. The violent mob was searching for Srila Prabhupada in order to kill him, but Sri Vinodabihari Brahmacari (Parama-gurudeva) immediately took him to a nearby bhakta’s house for protection. There, Sri Vinodabiharé quickly put on Srila Prabhupada’s sannyasa dress and took his danda, giving his own white clothes to Srila Prabhupada to wear. After that, he sent Srila Prabhupada to Sridhama Mayapura, and the mob did not recognize Prabhupada in his disguise. Meanwhile, the police arrived…The corrupt police suppressed news of this event, but the famous magazine Ananda Bazara published an account of the atrocity…All the Vaiñëavas were amazed at Sri Vinodabihari Brahmacari’s remarkable guru-nistha (his fixed service to his guru), and the incident was discussed everywhere. This is how Sri Vinodabihari reacted fearlessly when some injustice or atrocity threatened Srila Prabhupada or challenged Srila Prabhupada’s views.
PICTURE ABOVE: Srila Gurudeva is at our far left, with the sannyasa danda, Parama-gurudeva is prominently seated in front, and standing on our far right, in the separate frame, is Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura Prabhupada.
At the same time, Parama-gurudeva understood his Guru Maharaja’s true transcendental position. He never abandoned his conclusive philosophical understanding. He never considered his Gurudeva a mere mortal, who feels the fears, pains, and pleasures of this world. Here is an example his understanding, as quoted in his Rays of the Harmonist article (Kartika 2006, Issue 16) called “Remembering Srila Prabhupada.”
“The eternal form of the acarya deva is composed of knowledge and bliss, and remains constitutionally unchangeable – just like a dramatic performer [who appears to go through various transformations during his performance, but remains the same unaltered person].”
For our benefit, he is presenting himself as a conditioned soul:
“Due to my misfortune, I never became qualified to perceive the body of Srila Prabhupada as a transcendental, eternal deity full of knowledge and bliss – although you [my god-brothers] all educated me on this repeatedly. Upon noting my mundane conception of him, Srila Prabhupada would, from time to time, sweetly and knowingly enact being ill…In reality the transcendental body of Srila Prabhupada cannot be diseased or possess any abnormality – but at that time I could not understand this even slightly…I could not realise anything about the transcendental nature of Srila Prabhupada, having been cheated of his real mercy – and thus I have been deprived forever. Such is the result of not allowing his fully conscious words to enter my ears. This indeed is my extreme misfortune.”
We want to follow in the footsteps of our Parama-gurudeva. In order to traverse the path to understand who our Srila Gurudeva really is, what is his actual ‘situation,’ and how we can enter eternal service to him, it is essential to see him through the eyes of scriptures. In Srila Prabhupada Bhaktivedanta Svami Maharaja’s Nectar of Devotion, Chapter 21, we find this statement regarding the necessity of seeing through the eyes of scripture.
“A person who acts exactly according to the tenets of scripture is called sastra-caksus. Sastra-caksus means one who sees through the eyes of the authorized scriptures. Actually, any man of knowledge and experience should see everything through these books. For example, with our naked eye we perceive the sun globe simply as some glaring substance, but when we see through authorized books of science and other literature, we can understand how much greater the sun globe is than this earth and how powerful it is. So seeing things through the naked eye is not actually seeing. Seeing things through the authorized books or authorized teachers is the correct way to see.”

THE POND OF THE ANGER OF LOVE
Maan Sarovara, Vrndavana: October 14, 2003
Srila Maharaja at Maan Sarovara, 2003
[By the mercy of Sri Sri Guru and Gauranga, 2010 Vraja Mandala Parikrama is going on smoothly. Today, the parikrama party went to Maan-sarovara, therefore we are sending out what Srila Maharaja spoke there in 2003:] .
You should take acamana * [See endnote 1] from this pond, thinking it to be the very svarupa (form) of Srimati Radhika – and pray for Her mercy.* [See endnote 2] During rasa-lila, Srimati Radhika saw that, "Krsna is dancing with Me, but at the same time He is dancing with all the other gopis. He tells lies like, ‘I have given You My heart. You are My most beloved.' But now He is treating Me just like the others." She entered a sulky mood, a very angry mood, and at once began to weep. She left the rasa-mandala (the circle of the rasa dance) in Seva-kunja, crossed the Yamuna, and finally came to this lonely forest to hide Herself here.
Rasa stopped, because Sri Krsna began searching for Her – searching, searching, searching. When He finally found Her He saw that She was weeping, and that a large pond was created from Her tears. Thus, this place is called Maan Sarovara, the sarovara (pond) made from the maan (transcendental loving jealous anger) of Srimati Radhika.
Sri Krsna pacified Her here, although to pacify Her was very hard for Him. He took Her lotus feet upon His head, tried to appease Her in many ways, and He also took a vow: "From now onwards I will never do anything wrong. I accept that I have committed a mistake. I have offended you, but I promise that I will never do this in the future."
You can see how beautiful these forest kunjas are. There were millions of groves and kunjas here at that time. When Srimati Radhika or Sri Krsna were hiding themselves in any kunja, it was very difficult for them to discover where the other was hidden. At that time the trees were not like this. Now they are feeling separation for Srimati Radhika and Lord Krsna and are about to die. These trees know all the sweet pastimes of Srimati Radhika's hiding from Krsna, as well as all other such lilas, and now they cannot see these manifest in this world.
We have brought you all to see how beautiful these kunjas are. At that time these trees were straight and covered with lush creepers, though now they are lying down. No unauthorized person was able see through them, to see who was there or not. At that time the kunjas where so large that rasa-lila and all other related pastimes used to take place in them. Millions of gopis could fit in them. At that time Vrndavana forest was only forest. There were not many houses as there are today. According to the desire of Lord Krsna, the kunjas and land could expand and reduce in size. You are very lucky to come with me to very beautiful places like this one.
Previously we used to perform parikrama by foot. From Balevan we used to cross the Jamuna by boat, and then walk here by the shore of Jamuna in 20 – 30 minutes, and then we would return to Vrndavana. Now I cannot do so, but I want that one day you should also try to do parikrama by foot.
I brought you here to touch this place, and to touch the feet of these trees. These trees are exalted devotees. They previously saw the Lord's pastimes as trees, and now they are performing austerities in this form. One day they will have gopi forms, and at that time they will be able to enter rasa-lila and other such pastimes.
This scenery is so beautiful. If anyone has a camera he should take a picture of it. Birds are sitting here, and the water is very lovely and tasty. You are lucky to have come to this exalted holy place.
Now I request you all to take prasadam. Brahmacaris and sannyasis will sit here on one side and ladies will be on the other side. At once, without delay, please go and sit – because we do not have much time.
[* Endnote 1 – Acamana - a ritual of purification by which one takes bath by mantra and sips water three times. At the holy places one chants the acamana mantra, om kesavaya namah etc., and then prays to the particular pond or river or lake, "You have personally witnessed the pastimes of Radha and Krsna here, so you are qualified to manifest those pastimes in my heart. Please bestow your mercy upon me so that I may one day be qualified to see those pastimes. Please manifest in my heart what you have seen."
[*Endnote 2 – (We asked Pujyapad Madhava Maharaja what Srila Gurudeva may have said at any other time as to why, since both Maan Sarovara and Radha-kunda are both the svarupa of Srimati Radhika, Radha-kunda is superior. He replied, "The midday pastimes took place there at Sri Radha-kunda as well as many other pastimes which are not possible at Maan Sarovara or anywhere else. Therefore Radha-kunda is superior to any other kunda. Still, this place is so sacred and exalted, and is also the very form and identity of Srimati Radhika.

Dear devotees,
Please accept my dandavat pranams. All glories to Srila Gurudeva and Srila Prabhupada. All glories to Sri Sri Guru and Gauranga. All glories to Sri Sri Radha-Vinodehariji.
I have just spoken to Brajanath Prabhu (10.30 am). There was some difficulty in Srila Gurudeva’s condition yesterday, but he is stable again now. Apart from that, there is very little to report. Doctor Ray will be returning from Malaysia next week. The nutrition and the medical treatment are continuing. There is no definite decision regarding Srila Gurudeva moving either to Vrindavan or to Govardhan.
Brajanath Prabhu requested that we continue to pray to Giriraja Govardhan for a breakthrough.

Dear devotees,
Please accept my dandavat pranams. All glories to Srila Gurudeva and Srila Prabhupada. All glories to Sri Sri Guru and Gauranga. All glories to Sri Sri Radha-Vinodehariji.
Yesterday, Srila Gurudeva was quite active, and expressed a desire to come to Vrindavan as soon as possible. However, he did not rest well last night. Hopefully, this was a reaction to some new medication. We are awaiting more detailed information.

Tridandisvami Sri Srimad Bhaktivedanta Narayana Maharaja
A PHONED GLORIFICATION OF KARTIKA MONTH
Vrndavana, India: Oct. 28, 2002 (Part 1)
Kartik, 2010 Parikrama
[In Vrndavana, India, October 28, 2002, at 6am, upon the first glimpses of sunrise, five hundred devotees from India and around the world were sitting in the beautiful Sri Rupa Sanatana Gaudiya Matha in Vrndavana, India. Surrounded by Rajasthani pillars, colorful bas-relief and other paintings of Krsna's pastimes on the walls, walls painted in shades of yellow, saffron, and beige, sastric verses appropriate for entering vraja-bhakti painted in large letters above the archways, and lush creepers hanging from the balconies, the devotees had just finished singing their morning bhajanas.
They were now waiting to be connected by a loudspeaker phone system to the voice of Paramaradya Sri Srimad Bhaktivedanta Narayana Gosvami Maharaja. He was in Delhi, some four hours away by material calculation, resting in the home of his disciples as he performed his naravata-lila (human-like pastimes) of recuperating from a recent heart operation. As baby Krsna liberated His devotees Nalakuvera and Manigriva, although His own belly was bound by ropes, so Srila Maharaja now performed a heart operation on his followers, although in his naravata-lila he was recuperating from his own.
Srila Maharaja began his phoned discourse in English, but then he said he would continue in Hindi. The doctors had allowed him only ten minutes to speak, and in Hindi, his mother tongue, he would be able to reveal much more than in English. After his lecture was completed, Sripad Madhava Maharaja, who was present with him, translated his Hindi into Bengali, and after the receiver clicked, Prema-prayojana dasa translated it into English. The following is a transcription of part 1 of that English translation:]
Very rapidly and very energetically, practically without pausing for any breath at all, and having so much taste and relish in the glorification of Kartika vrata*, Srila Maharaja explained many things, and I will try to repeat them one by one.
First he wanted to impress upon us how fortunate we are. He said, "I am not fortunate because I am in Delhi, so close to Vrndavana yet so far away. But you are lucky because you are in Vrndavana dhama during this time of Kartika and you are observing Kartika vrata there.
What is the significance of this Kartika month and Damodara vrata? Srila Maharaja said that this month is called the month of Damodara; Damodara is He whose belly was bound by the rope of Mother Yasoda. He was not actually bound by a rope, however; He was bound by prema, by pure vatsalya-bhava (parental love). Krsna is anadi; He has no beginning. And He is ananta; He has no end. Still, although He is Parambrahma, that unlimited beginningless and endless Supreme Lord can be bound and trapped by prema. Therefore this month is called Damodara vrata, and those who observe it will attain the prema by which they can bind Parambrahma, the Supreme Lord. Those who can observe this vrata are very fortunate.
This month is also called Urja vrata. Urja means sakti, and it specifically refers to Krsna's internal potency, antaranga sakti – Srimati Radhika. Urja vrata actually means Radha vrata, a vow taken for the happiness of Srimati Radhika. If one hears Her glorification in this month, the fruit will come in the form of gopi-prema.
This month is also called Kartika. The adhistatri-devata, predominating deity, of Kartika month is Kirtika-kumari, the young daughter of Kirtika, Srimati Radhika. Those who honor this month, of which Radhika is the predominating deity, by going to the pastime places of Krsna, will certainly, without any doubt at all, have all their desires completely fulfilled. They will attain jugal-seva, service of Radha and Krsna in the anugatya (guidance) of the Vraja gopis.
Srila Maharaja then explained that Satyavata Rsi has glorified Damodara month by the verses in his song Sri Damodarastakam, beginning namamisvaram sat-cit-ananda-rupam lasat-kundalam gokule vrajamanam.
Rudantam muhur netram-jugman mirjantam. Rudantam means that Krsna is crying and looking towards His mother who has held up a stick. Krsna is pleading, "Don’t beat me! Don't beat me!" because Mother Yasoda held the stick as though she was going to throw it at him. He was afraid, and she caught him. Mother Yasoda is so fortunate that she could catch Krsna and then bind Him with her love.
nemam virinco na bhavo
na srir apy anga-samsraya
prasadam lebhire gopi
yat tat prapa vimuktidat
(Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.9.20)
["Neither Lord Brahma, nor Lord Siva, nor even the goddess of fortune, who is always the better half of the Supreme Lord, can obtain from the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the deliverer from this material world, such mercy as received by mother Yasoda."]
Even Brahmaji, the direct son of Bhagavan, is not so fortunate as to have a love like that of Mother Yasoda. Even Sankara, who is called Hari-hara-ekatma and who thus feels oneness with Bhagavan, cannot have a love like this. Even Laksmi-devi, Bhagavan's full aisvarya-sakti, never has the chance to bind her consort. This is impossible for all of them. But Mother Yasoda has attained this, and she is therefore glorified by Srila Sukadeva Gosvami:
nayam sukhapo bhagavan
dehinam gopika-sutah
jnaninam catma-bhatanam
yatha bhaktimatam iha
(Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.9.21)
Unless one has love that of like Mother Yasoda, Krsna cannot be bound. He cannot be bound by those who have a bodily conception (dehinam). This mercy is very far away from them. Those who may be liberated (jnaninam), and those who may even be associates but with aisvarya-jnana, knowledge of Krsna's opulence, also cannot bind Krsna. And even for those who have yogic siddhis (atma-bhutanam), this mercy is inconceivable and inaccessible. This type of mercy was attained by Yasoda Maiya, because Krsna can only be bound by prema – not by any other quality.
Srila Maharaja then explained that in this month, when Krsna's babyhood came to an end, He began his boyhood pastimes and went out to graze calves for the first time. Because He was very small, at first He only grazed calves, and the day on which He began is called Gopastami. Then, when He was older, more mature, and entering His kaisora age, He had another Gopastami. This was the first day He went out to graze the cows. Why does Krsna graze calves and cows? He is the son of a king, without any duty. The answer is that on the pretext of grazing cows He escapes the confines of His home and the vigilant glances of His parents and seniors, so that He can go to the forest and meet with Srimati Radhika and the gopis. Gopasthami marks the day of the fulfillment of Krsna's desires to directly have their first intimate meeting, and this pastime also took place in the month of Kartika.
This month is also auspicious because Krsna's leaving the village and going out for cow grazing has been described by the gopis (in Venu-gita: Srimad-Bhagavatam Tenth Canto Chapter 21) in this month. Sri Sukadeva Gosvami said:
sri-suka uvaca
ittham sarat-svaccha-jalam
padmakara-sugandhina
nyavisad vayuna vatam
sa-go-gopalako ‘cyutam
(Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.21.1)
["Sukadeva Gosvami said: 'Thus the Vrndavana forest was filled with transparent autumnal waters and cooled by breezes perfumed with the fragrance of lotus flowers growing in the clear lakes. The infallible Lord, accompanied by His cows and cowherd boyfriends, entered that Vrndavana forest.'"]
Acyuta, Krsna, along with His friends, entered into the forest in this sarad (autumn) season. The first night of Kartika was Saradiya Purnima, the full moon night of the autumn season. Srila Maharaja explained how beautiful Vrndavana is at that time. All the lakes and rivers become muddy during the summer, but when that season ends and the sarad season begins, all the lakes, like Manasi Ganga and Kusuma Sarovara, become clear and beautiful. Upon these lakes sit many blossoming lotus flowers that emit a beautiful fragrance, and the breeze carries that fragrance everywhere. In this beautiful atmosphere, Krsna, Acyuta, has gone out to graze cows.
kusumita-vanaraji-susmi-bhrnga
dvija-kula-ghusta-sarah-sarin-mahidhram
madhupatir avagahya carayan gah
saha-pasu-pala-balas cukuja venum
(Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.21.2)
["The lakes, rivers, and hills of Vrndavana resounded with the sounds of maddened bees and flocks of birds moving about the flowering trees. In the company of the cowherd boys and Balarama, Madhupati Sri Krsna entered that forest, and while herding the cows He began to play His flute."]
In Vrndavana there are many rows of flowering trees, which are attracting the bumblebees, who are now intoxicated by their honey. Many types of birds are singing various tunes, and these birds play on different mountains like Giri Govardhana. At that time, Madhupati Krsna, who is full of madhu, sweet and attractive qualities, entered the forest surrounded by His friends.
In this month the gopis stay in their homes and feel great separation from Krsna, and at the same time, by their bhava-netra, the eyes of their ecstatic love for Krsna, they can see Him entering the forest.
barhapidam nata-vara-vapuh karnayoh karnikaram
bibhrad vasah kanaka-kapisam vaijayantim ca malam
randhran venor adhara-sudhayapurayan gopa-vrndair
vrndaranyam sva-pada-ramanam pravisad gita-kirtih
(Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.21.5)
["Wearing a peacock-feather ornament upon His head, blue karnikara flowers on His ears, a yellow garment as brilliant as gold, and the Vaijayanti garland, Lord Krsna exhibited His transcendental form as the greatest of dancers as He entered the forest of Vrndavana, beautifying it with the marks of His footprints. He filled the holes of His flute with the nectar of His lips, and the cowherd boys sang His glories."]
All these verses are the glory of this month. It was in this month that the gopis remained in their homes and spoke to each other:
aksanvatam phalam idam na param vidamah
sakhyam pasun anuvivesayator vayasyaih
vaktram vrajesa-sutayor anavenu-justam
yair va nipitam anurakta-kataksa-moksam
(Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.21.7)
["The cowherd girls said: 'O friends, those eyes that see the beautiful faces of the sons of Maharaja Nanda are certainly fortunate. As these two sons enter the forest, surrounded by Their friends, driving the cows before Them, They hold Their flutes to Their mouths and glance lovingly upon the residents of Vrndavana. For those who have eyes, we think there is no greater object of vision.'"]
O sakhi, in this world the vision of this scene is the fruit of having eyes. Krsna is going slowly, remaining somewhat behind the other cowherd boys, so that Balarama will go ahead. Meanwhile, He is looking here and there, hoping to have a glimpse of Srimati Radhika.
[Endnote: A vrata is a vow to observe the rules and regulations and ceremonial functions of a particular holy occasion.]

Dear Friends and dear Devotees,
please accept our dandavats pranams. All glories to Sri Guru and Sri Gauranga and all glories to Sri Sri Radha Vinode Bihariji.
Srila Gurudeva sends his heartly blessings to all of you. He requests that we come and join Sri Vraja Mandal Parikram in this most auspicious month of Kartik. To be in Vraja in this month, under the guidance of the pure representatives of Sri Sri Radha Krsna, hearing Harikatha from their lotus lips, visiting the sacred places where the divine couple eternally perform Their sweet pastimes, this is the most powerful, spiritually nourishing activity.
Srila Gurudeva shared this morning that he will come very soon and be with us in Vraja.
We want to express our appreciation for the support that we already have received, and continue to receive from all of you. The seva team assisting Srila Gurudeva here in Sri Radha Raman Bihari Gaudiya Math consists of about 25 devotees. We experience a most wonderful harmony amidst the many concerns that are there for Srila Gurudeva’s wellbeing and pleasure. All we desire is that Srila Gurudeva should be served well and receive the best medical attention under the circumstances. This is no doubt challenging and very difficult.
Service is producing happiness when we are in harmony and focused upon providing pleasure to the object of our service. Pleasing Srila Gurudeva, adjusting with each other, bringing him comfort and allowing him to render his own transcendental seva, this is our only focus.
We are happy to inform you that Srila Gurudeva is giving initiations and brief darshans to all, that he is receiving expert, affectionate care, as well as first class medical treatment. We are overjoyed to observe little, little improvements every day, although we are well aware that there still is a long way to go.
Please continue your prayers and your wonderful services.
Vaisnavadasanudasa & aspirant for the service of Sri Guru and Vaisnavas
Swami B.V. Madhava & Brajanath das
One should understand Krishna in truth, and this one can do only by serving a pure devotee.

Dear devotees,
Please accept my dandavat pranams. All glories to Srila Gurudeva and Srila Prabhupada. All glories to Sri Sri Guru and Gauranga. All glories to Sri Sri Radha-Vinodehariji.
I am happy to say that Srila Gurudeva’s condition is still stable. Not only that, but Brajanath told me last night that he is “a little better every day”. Having said that, Brajanath Prabhu also said, “There is a long way to go.” He has requested that we continue to pray to Giriraj Govardhan.
Srila Gurudeva walked around his room a little today, and gave initiation to some devotees. He also went to the door to see devotees on the other side. Isa Prabhu said it was very moving to see him at the door with his hand on the gauze screen, and the devotees on the other side touching his hand through the gauze. For the second day running, Srila Gurudeva has eaten a little kitcheri himself.
The strategy in naturopathy is different from the allopathic approach, which in attacking the cancer, mounts a massive assault on the whole body. Doctor Ray’s approach is to build up the strength of the body and immune system, so that the body can itself fight the invasion. At the same time, there is specific medical treatment, which does not weaken the body as a whole.

Dear devotees,
Please accept my dandavat pranams. All glories to Srila Gurudeva and Srila Prabhupada. All glories to Sri Sri Guru and Gauranga. All glories to Sri Sri Radha-Vinodehariji.
Please excuse me for sending this report out late, partly due to the process of getting a SIM card here. I have heard that the reports are being translated into Russian, Spanish and Lithuanian.
I spoke to Bhudhara Prabhu, who explained that there is actually very little “news”. Srila Gurudeva’s condition is still stable. There appears to have been some slight improvement. For example, he has walked a little, and asked for some kitcheri, which he ate with a spoon. However, it is difficult to say how significant this is, because there are always fluctuations from day to day. The care and treatment continues in an exemplary way, as Brajesh Prabhu has pointed out. Bhudhara Prabhu said that the physical and emotional strength required are practically superhuman. The emphasis is still on nutrition and hydration, and treatment is also going on. The team is strictly following the protocols that Doctor Ray prescribed.
There has been some discussion regarding moving Srila Gurudeva to Govardhan. It does not seem so practical at present, simply from a medical point of view. For example, there are sometimes as many as five different doctors coming to see Srila Gurudeva in a single day. This would not be practical if he were in Govardhan. Apart from that, there is the practical issue of moving Srila Gurudeva in his present condition. This is, of course, seeing the pure devotee from the physical and medical point of view, and there are ongoing discussions about that as well.
