News from Delhi Math October 23rd

Dear devotees,

Please accept my dandavat pranams. All glories to Srila Gurudeva and Srila Prabhupada. All glories to Sri Sri Guru and Gauranga. All glories to Sri Sri Radha-Vinodehariji.

I have just recently (about 1 pm) spoken with devotees in the Delhi Math. I was relieved and happy to hear once again that Srila Gurudeva’s condition is stable. His disciple Brajesh Prabhu, himself a very experienced naturopathic doctor, is overseeing the nutrition and treatment, which are still going on according to Doctor Ray’s direction. Brajesh Prabhu has said that all aspects of Gurudeva’s care and treatment are first-class.

There is no immediate plan to move Srila Gurudeva to Govardhan. It may happen in a couple of weeks’ time. In one sense, this is good news, because it means that there is no immediate crisis. Of course devotees are yearning to have some small darshan of their beloved Gurudeva. This morning, our BV Sridhara Maharaja (previously Rasananda Prabhu) became momentarily overwhelmed as he spoke about starting the parikrama without Srila Gurudeva’s physical presence. Parikrama is going on very nicely under the direction of Srila Gurudeva’s senior devotees.

Several devotees have taken it on themselves to communicate directly with Srila Gurudeva’s personal physician. Of course, many of us feel that we have just the right treatment, which is going to make all the difference. Others are just in anxiety about Srila Gurudeva’s condition. Either way, contacting the doctor directly will not help; on the contrary, it is counter-productive. In the first place, it is very unprofessional. From a legal and ethical point of view, the relationship between doctor and patient is confidential, and should not be disturbed. Of course, we may think, “But he is my Gurudeva.” That is true, but it does not give us the right to try to monitor or control the treatment. The second point is that it is a big distraction for the doctor. We request that devotees should on no account try to get in direct touch with Srila Gurudeva’s doctor, as it will have an adverse effect on the whole process of consultation and treatment.

This morning I met Uma Didi, a very senior shiksha disciple of Srila Gurudeva. She explained the point of view of some senior devotees who had been disturbed by some of the content of some of the reports that I wrote previously. She said that the eating, sleeping and other personal affairs of the acarya are confidential, and should not be discussed publicly in a mixed audience. “But I know that you Western devotees want to hear these details.”

I am trying to write in such a way as to satisfy everyone’s needs and sensitivities.

Aspiring for service Sri Hari, Guru and Vaishnavas,

B V Nemi
